Tensions escalated in West Bengal as BJP and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders clashed over the handling of a recent rape case and its political implications. The controversy centers on demands for transparency and justice in the investigation of the case.
BJP councilors have called for a detailed examination of the evidence and swift action from the CBI. They argue that if evidence is missing, it should be noted in the charge sheet. The BJP has criticized the current handling of the case, comparing it to previous high-profile rape cases such as Unnao, Hatrash, and Nirbhaya, and demanding that the state assembly support a bill advocating capital punishment for rapists.
TMC leaders, including Mayor Firhad Hakim, have responded fiercely. Hakim accused the BJP of politicizing the issue, pointing out that the BJP’s criticism was hypocritical given past instances where BJP leaders were seen garlanding rapists. He also challenged BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari for politicizing both the rape case and the death of the victim, questioning his party’s track record.
Hakim emphasized that the rape case is a grave insult and stressed the need for immediate justice. He condemned any delay in the investigation as a denial of justice and highlighted the need to respect women and uphold societal values. The TMC has called for support of the bill proposed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, which seeks stringent measures against rapists.
